Have you tried right clicking on the speaker icon at the bottom rhs of the screen. Select playback devices and see what default device is selected.

Try a different one to see what happens. I have a PC that select an output that does not exist by default so I have to manually change it when I load a new OS or audio driver. Can you hear any system sounds from your PC on internal or external speakers? You can test it out by clicking on the sounds tab after you have done the above then select one of the sounds from the menu then click TEST to hear the sound.

If you can hear something then the issue could be with other audio/video player software. Have you checked that there are no other drivers listed in device manager that have an exclamation mark as they may be associated with the sound issue?
