I have a HP Laserjet 2100/M/TN printer which worked perfectly in Windows XP but since I got a new computer with W7 on it, it has hardly worked. From time to time I have got it to work, but then it stops. The printer has a 25 pin cable, but I have had put on an adapter to convert to USB because my new computer doesnt have 25 pin sockets. I have run out of ideas for getting the printer to work reliably and consistently. Right now the issue is that Windows is not recognising the printer. So I get the standard message that 'device malfunctioned' and not recognised so windows stopped the device.

It seems that this is a fairly common problem, but how to fix it seems anything but straightforward, as far as i can tell.
